IJmuiden, the Netherlands

In October 2020 we launched our North Sea Channel project. With the support of Port of Amsterdam Rijkswaterstaat and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) we will install 3 artificial reefs at different locations in the North Sea Channel. With this project we create habitats for biodiversity in salt, brackish and sweet water. The installation containing 30 MOSES-modules was constructed on a frame 24 hours before placement. Van Oord provided a helping hand with the installation. A big thank you to them!

Prior to installation

Researchers from the Marine Animal Ecology Group from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) have taken water samples prior to the installation. These samples were filtered to extract the DNA of local marine life. With eDNA research the different species can be identified. In the coming years we the WUR  will periodically analyze water samples to find out the effect of the artificial reef on the local ecosystem.
