Utrecht, the Netherlands

In the center of Utrecht the Catharijnesingel is an important part of the city, where people for a walk or to rest. Since the quay was in bad shape the Gemeente Utrecht had to renovate it, whereafter a 135 meters long jetty has been installed for boats to come and go. In collaboration with Gemeente Utrecht and Hoogheemraadschap De Stichtse Rijnlanden we have developed plans for habitat creation with this construction project. ReefSystems has installed 180 habitats for algae, water insects and other aquatic invertebrates to grow on. These organisms are a food source for local and migrating (endangered) fish species. Furthermore the habitats provide shelter opportunities for these species to reproduce to stimulate population growth. The regional water authorities and their professional monitoring partners will monitor the structures in the coming years to map the exact positive environmental impact.
